Hippodonta fujiannensis sp. nov., a new small-sized species ofHippodonta(Bacillariophyceae), was described from the
low intertidal zone, Fujian Province, China. The morphology and ultrastructure were investigated by light and scanning
electron microscopy, which revealed the following results: 1) valves asymmetrical, elliptic-lanceolate to rhombic-lanceolate
with non-protracted apices; 2) raphe filiform, with teardrop-shaped and closely spaced central endings; 3) striae uniseriate,
evenly spaced throughout the whole valve; 4) single row of lineolae around the valve apices. In particular, this new species
is characterized by its dissymmetrical valves with one special column of lineolae which is close to the raphe and positioned
perpendicular to the remaining lineolae of the striae, on only one side of the valves.Hippodonta fujiannensisis epipsammic
and inhabits the marine environment. Conventional morphometric analyses were employed to elucidate the differences
between this new species and several taxa similar in valve morphology, and the results are discussed.

Fig. 16.SEM images ofHippodonta fujiannensis. Figs 14, 17, 18. External view of entire valve. Striae uniseriate throughout
the valve face and mantle. On one valve side, one column of lineolae closest to the raphe is positioned perpendicular towards remaining
lineolae of the striae. Figs 15, 19. Close up of valve apices. Terminal endings of raphe distinct, strongly pronounced, teardrop-shaped
depressions, positioned before terminal area or weakly advancing into it, slightly curved towards one valve side. Figs 16, 20. Close up of
the central area. Central endings of the raphe small, teardrop-shaped depressions; central endings are positioned close together. Central
area dissymmetrical. Scale bars in Figs 14, 18 = 5 μm; Fig. 17 = 2μm; Figs 15, 16, 19, 20 = 1μm.
